“To live on a day-to-day basis is insufficent for human beings; we need to transcend, transport, escape; we need meaning, understanding, and explanation; we need to see over-all patterns in our lives. We need hope, the sense of a future. And we need freedom (or at least the illusion of freedom) to get beyond ourselves, whether with telescopes and microscopes and our ever-burgeoning technology, or in states of mind that allow us to travel to other worlds, to rise above our immediate surroundings.”
Excerpt from “Alterned States” By Oliver Sacks in recent issue of The New Yorker
Sacks continues on to recount his years of exploration with mind altering drugs, but that’t not why I share this here. The above first graph with the very cool accompanying illustration, had me at the start. This quote especially spoke to me, had me nodding my head saying, yeap…that’s it. Ok, so i’m my case its not necessarily mind-altering drugs, but it is that altered state that I feel so fortunate to experience.
He described the feeling a lot of us movement junkies strive for and reach in class when its just REALLY good. It all comes together and its gorgeous. The ability to truly let it all go, get lost in music, in the sweat and movement, and getting fed from the energy eminating from those surrounding you. That’s why i LOVE what i do.
Am living and loving Brooklyn. Drinking up this city, but my truth is that I cannot WAIT to start teaching again. To give and get. Late october and it is ON at Revolve. Stay tuned………
